Kirkwood Tack Swap
January 27-28, 2007

This was the first year that the ILA has participated in the Kirkwood Tack Swap held at the
Iowa Equestrian Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The event was a great opportunity for members to sell their used/new items as well as an opportunity for the ILA to create awareness of the organization and its activities.
Jochen Hippenstiel Dressage Clinic
April 28-29, 2007

On April 28-29,
Shellhaven Farm, along with co-sponsor ILA, hosted another wonderful clinic with Jochen Hippenstiel, head trainer for the Tempel Lipizzans.

Jochen once again worked with various types of horses, including Hanoverians, Friesians, Danish Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, and Lipizzans, with ages ranging from 3 to 23.  Jochen's teaching and training reflected a solid grounding in the German training scale and an uncanny ability to immediately know a combination's strengths and weaknesses.  He systematically worked with the rider to encourage their horses to be more supple, forward, and in greater self-carriage.  Jochen's gregarious personality left clinic participants at ease and armed with new knowledge (and lots of homework!).
The Passing of a Legend

On Friday, May 11, 2007, the horse community lost one of its living legends -
Verne Harry Upmier. Verne was a man whose reputation was that of the kindest, gentlest, and most honest men in Iowa horse history.  He bettered many lives by introducing people to the world of horses.

In 2003 and 2004, the
Rare Breed & Dressage Horse Expo was dedicated to Verne.  A portion of the proceeds was used to fund a scholarship in Verne's name for Kirkwood Community College Horse Science Students.
Oneness Clinic, Part II
August 8, 2007

Shellhaven Farm
and the ILA built on the foundation of centering, body awareness, and rider's position that was laid last year.

Participants worked through various exercises to become more aware of their bodies and how energy influences actions and responses.  The hands-on experience and demonstrations helped participants gain a greater understanding of the material presented and many left with new tools to become better riders.
